At least two Civil Guard police agents have been killed in a bomb explosion outside a Civil Guard installation in the resort town of Palmanova, near Palma. The explosion took place at around 1.30pm, with one witness saying the bomb seemed to have been in a patrol car. It comes just two days after a similar attack on a Guardia Civil barracks in the northern Sanish city of Burgos and two days before a visit from the Spanish royal family to the island. Spanish media are blaming the attack on ETA. |

The explosion bears many of the hallmarks of an ETA attack, the terrorist organisation which celebrates its 50th anniversary tomorrow (July 31). It's the first time an ETA attack has killed anyone on Mallorca, and only its third ever. The most famous previous operation by the group was the failed attempt on the life of King Juan Carlos in 1995. |
